Itinerary
Yuanjiajie (Mihuantai, Qiankunzhu, The First Bridge Under Heaven):
From the central bus station of Zhangjiajie, take the "City - Zhangjiajie National Forest Park" shuttle bus to the ticket office of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, where you can purchase your tickets. First, take the Bailong Elevator to Yuanjiajie, known as the mysterious "Pandora World". Here, you can explore the floating mountains and the unpredictable, mystical world depicted in "Avatar". Mihuantai, Qiankunzhu, and The First Bridge Under Heaven are all popular attractions. Mihuantai, located 400m east of The First Bridge Under Heaven, is one of the best natural viewing platforms in Yuanjiajie. Standing here, you can overlook the vast basin with its towering and varied green peaks, which resemble buildings, pavilions, and terraces, presenting a breathtaking and diverse scenery. Qiankunzhu (also known as Nantian Yizhu) is the filming location for the floating "Hallelujah Mountain" in the movie "Avatar". The peak is covered with lush vegetation, and its shape is so unique, as if it were carved by a knife or axe, standing tall and upright, hence the name Qiankunzhu. The First Bridge Under Heaven is a natural stone slab about 4 meters thick, suspended between two peaks, connecting the east and west sides. On rainy days, clouds often swirl and roll under the bridge. Be sure to book your tickets online in advance, as the scenic area has a limited number of visitors and entry is in batches. Tickets may not be available on the day of purchase.
The Wulingyuan Core Scenic Area (also known as Zhangjiajie National Forest Park) has a ticket price of 228 yuan and is divided into four scenic areas: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Suoxiyu Scenic Area, Tianzishan Scenic Area, and Yangjiajie Scenic Area. The ticket price includes the environmental protection bus within the scenic area but does not include items such as cable cars, elevators, and small trains.
Taking the "City - Zhangjiajie National Forest Park" shuttle bus from the central bus station of Zhangjiajie: It departs every 10 minutes, covers a total distance of about 30 kilometers, takes about 40 minutes, and costs 12 yuan per person, directly reaching the parking lot of the scenic area ticket office.
Yangjiajie (Wulongzhai, Yixiantian, Tianbofu):
Take the scenic area's environmental protection bus from Tianqiao Station, and you will arrive at Wulongzhai in Yangjiajie within 10 minutes. Yangjiajie is a favorite place for backpackers and adventure enthusiasts, mainly featuring primitive natural beauty and characterized by its "dangerous" terrain with high mountains and narrow paths. Compared to Jinbianxi and Yuanjiajie, it is quiet and mysterious. Wulongzhai, formerly known as "Heilongzhai", was once inhabited by Xiangxi bandits. The fortress is built on the mountain and is the most precipitous place in Yangjiajie. From the Wulongzhai viewing platform, you can take in the breathtaking view of strange peaks and rocks, as well as naturally formed landscapes. There is a small fortress at the entrance of Wulongzhai that provides dining services, where you can take a break and recharge. If you have a lot of luggage, you can store it at the entrance for around 2-5 yuan. If someone charges for taking photos of items such as plaques inside Wulongzhai, you can avoid the fee by taking photos from a different angle. Yixiantian leads to the final challenge of the three gates of Wulongzhai, "Who Can Pass Without Sidling?". The stone path passes through two huge rocks, and you must sidle to slowly ascend. It is said that in the past, only women who could sidle through this narrow pass without touching their shoulders were qualified to be the chieftain's wife of Wulongzhai. Tianbofu is a platform on the mountaintop, surrounded by dozens of cliff walls, creating a grand scene that resembles ruined walls and forts from afar. Locals believe it to be the site of the "Tianbofu" of the Yang Family Generals. After crossing the swaying rope bridge and climbing to the top of Tianbofu, you can see all the scenery. The area around Wulongzhai is a great place for photography and is one of the best shooting locations in Zhangjiajie.
Tianzishan:
Take the scenic area's environmental protection bus from Wulongzhai, and you will arrive at Tianzishan Scenic Area in 30 minutes. It is named after Xiang Dakun, a Tujia ethnic group leader who called himself "the Heavenly King Xiang" in the early Ming Dynasty. The scenic area is particularly known for its sea of clouds, stone waves, winter snow, and sunrise. The scenic route is relatively concentrated, with the reputation of "viewing all the heavenly scenery from the railing". There are many restaurants and small shops in the Tianzishan area, as well as a McDonald's, so you don't have to worry about food while exploring. The "mountain ring road" is 45 kilometers long, and visitors can choose to walk or take the "environmental protection bus" within the park.
Laowuchang:
Laowuchang is dotted with towering peaks, and the village is surrounded by terraced fields, with mountains and waters facing each other, exuding a rich rural charm. The peak offers a unique view of the countryside. The scenic spots of "Gathering of Heavenly Troops" and "Celestial Garden in the Sky" on this tour route are both listed among the top ten attractions in Zhangjiajie. Many people claim that "Gathering of Heavenly Troops" is the most breathtaking and impressive sight in Zhangjiajie, worth a visit.
Jinbian Stream (also known as Jinbian Grand Canyon):
Take the eco-friendly vehicle at Dingxiangrong Station, get off at Shuiraosimen Station, and then walk for an hour to reach Jinbian Stream. The stretch along Jinbian Stream is the most beautiful part of the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, and it was used as the external filming location for the TV series "Journey to the West" representing the Flower and Fruit Mountain. In the stream, the national second-class protected animal, the mysterious and rare "baby fish," can be found. Along the way, you may encounter a song-requesting platform where you can request a Tujia folk song (20 yuan per song) or simply sit and listen to others' requests.
Shili Gallery:
It takes only 5 minutes to reach by taking the eco-friendly vehicle within the scenic area. This place is a narrow canyon, and walking through it feels like being in a painting. Dark peaks stand in parallel beside the gorge, and the rocks on the mountains have formed over 200 stone scenes resembling people, objects, birds, and animals, providing ample opportunities for photography. If you're on a tight schedule or feeling tired, you can choose to take the small train to enjoy the scenery effortlessly while listening to explanations. The best way to explore is to take a one-way sightseeing train and walk back the same way.
Grand Canyon Glass Bridge:
It is the world's highest and longest glass bridge, serving multiple functions such as bungee jumping, zip-lining, and staging events. Walking on it, you can take in the breathtaking beauty of Zhangjiajie, with mountains all around, feeling like you're in a fairyland.
Guigu Stack Path:
Situated amidst towering cliffs, the most thrilling and exciting section is the "Sky Walk" at the highest altitude. Standing on the stack path, you'll see flocks of birds beneath your feet and a vast mountainous landscape ahead, with birds playing in the canyon.
Tianmen Mountain Temple:
This temple, first built in the Tang Dynasty, is the Buddhist center of western Hunan. The current Tianmen Mountain Temple is a reconstruction on the original site, adopting the Qing Dynasty official style. The Guanyin Pavilion, with its exquisite design, complex structure, and unique charm, can be compared to various famous classical towers in China. Inside the temple, there is a relic of the Buddha Shakyamuni gifted by Lumbini, Nepal, one of only five in China.
Tianmen Mountain Cable Car:
When visiting Tianmen Mountain, tourists must take the sightseeing cable car to ascend. It is the world's longest high-mountain sightseeing passenger cable car and a rare sight globally. The Tianmen Mountain Cable Car has three stations: lower, middle, and upper. The lower station is located in Guanliping, Yongding District (within the city), the upper station is at the peak of Tianmen Mountain, where you can access attractions such as the Guigu Stack Path and the Glass Stack Path. The middle station is a transfer center where tourists can switch to eco-friendly vehicles to head to Tianmen Cave. Passengers can enjoy a bird's-eye view of Tianmen Cave while riding the cable car.
Tianmen Cave:
Majestic and towering, it is a rare high-altitude mountain-piercing karst cave. One can reach Tianmen Cave by climbing 999 steps of the Heavenly Stairway, which not only serves as a path to the gate of heaven but also as a sacred place for making wishes and prayers. Tianmen Mountain is primarily explored on foot (with cable cars or minibuses for ascending and descending, included in the main ticket price). Please conserve your energy. Currently, there is only one restaurant on the mountain with relatively high prices, so it's best to bring your own food. In winter, Tianmen Cave and the Glass Stack Path may be closed due to safety risks. The main ticket does not include the cost of shoe covers for the Glass Stack Path or the cable car ride at the peak within the scenic area.
